People's obsession with diamonds really dumbfounds me. I don't understand why people must adorn themselves with meaningless shiny things. Especially considering how many people are negatively affected by the diamond trade. Doesn't anyone think about this stuff when they go to the jewelry store? Doesn't it cross anyone's mind that they're essentially funding an arms race for civil wars in Africa? It's pretty despicable that someone likely died so some overprivileged ditz can strut down Madison Ave. with a diamond necklace. Vanity might be the worst of all human characteristics. I feel guilty buying a pair of Nikes and the shoe industry doesn't provide money for warlords. No one with a conscience should feel OK about buying diamonds. Especially some of these hypocrite rappers. Kanye West will make a damn song called "Diamonds from Sierra Leone," and you think for a second he has conflicted feelings about buying them, yet he continues to rock diamond-encrusted watches and necklaces. Give me a break. People need to cut this shit out.
