In certain ancient societies that would ritually sacrifice virgins to appease the gods, why didn't all the virgin women just have sex so they wouldn't be eligible for sacrifice? Were the men in these societies forbade from having sex with particular virgins so that they always had someone to sacrifice? Even if that were the case, I don't think it would be too difficult for a clever virgin woman to convince a man to disregard this policy for one night.
